My dog is allergic to eggs, wheat, rice, chicken, beef, goat and lamb. How can I make her treats?

It seems that everything in these recipes will make my dog itch. She has many allergies such as eggs, wheat, rice, chicken, beef, goat and lamb. I have a dog food that is made with pea flour but I think I could use garbonza bean flour. Can I substitute these in your recipes?

Chef's Answer ~ We can definitely come up with some substitutions for you to make many of the dog treat recipes here on the site.

Eggs are simple to substitute. Stir together a mixture of 1 Tbsp of ground flax with 3 Tbsps of warm water. Let it sit for a few minutes and then add this mixture in when the recipe calls for eggs.

In the dog treat recipes that call for a meat source that your dog can not have, try to replace it with the same amount of another meat source. For example, can your little girl have canned salmon or tuna? How about lean ground turkey? These may be acceptable substitutes, but check with her Vet to be safe.

Many of my dog treat recipes do not contain rice, so that shouldn't be a problem ingredient.

The wheat flour can be substituted with a gluten and grain free flour mix. For each cup of whole wheat flour, I would recommend 1/2 cup Garbanzo bean flour, 1/4 cup almond meal flour and 1/4 tapioca starch.

I hope this helps you make delicious and safe homemade dog treats for your sweet girl. Besides, who wouldn't want to make treats for that adorable face! Thanks for sharing her picture. :)

Pumpkin dog cookies

Try mixing one can purée pumpkin and stir in dry milk powder until soft dough forms. I scoop 2 tablespoons worth of dough onto fruit roll up tray for my dehydrator. Dehydrate until dry, flipping cookies over sometime during the drying process.
