Cheesy Flax & a Happy Puggle

by Lu

My puggle LOVES these cheesy flax treats! :)

She has nasty allergies so her diet is limited to homemade treats (so I can control the ingredients) & fruits & veggies (which she loves).

The flax treats have replaced carrots as her new most favorite. In fact, she gets a flax treat as a treat for eating her carrots now. :) Her skin & coat have really benefited from the omega 3's & her ears are as clean as can be.

I sometimes substitute 1/4 cup water with no sodium chicken broth as an added treat. :)

Thank you for your recipe :)

Good Day,

I'm delighted. I just baked some treats for Lola, our little dog, using your dog treat recipe.

She loves them. I tasted them too. They're very good.

Many thanks for giving us this recipe.

Chef's Comments ~ I'm so glad you BOTH like them! :)

Perfect and Easy Dog Treats!!

by Beth

My lab/chow mix loves these! I love these, lol! They are by far the easiest treats to make, I think the prep takes maybe 5 minutes! Great if you're in a hurry and promised your furry ones a treat!

My Silkey Terrier, Ryan, loves these!

He will barely wait until they are cooled down. Now he looks at the fridge when he wants treats.

Compliment! A healthy and yummy snack for me and my dogs!

by Vicky

I started out making this treat for my dog, and then I wondered, hmmmmm, flax is great for humans too. So I tasted it and it's delicious! I did omit the garlic powder though. But now I have a great healthy and yummy snack for me and my dogs! Thanks Dog Treat Kitchen!!

Can you subsitute the cheese in this dog treat recipe?

Loves it, stands by me as I bake them!

Chef's Answer ~ Sure, you can substitute a lot of different ingredients. However, I would need to know why you would like to substitute it so that I can provide a suitable alternative.

For example, does your dog want non-dairy cheese? Then I would recommend an almond based cheese for this dog treat.

If you'd like to give more details in the comments section, I'd be happy to help. :)

Can I add seaweed?
by: Gloria

Would I be able to add seaweed instead of cheese as my dog as allergies.

Chef's Answer ~ If you are referring to the food product dried seaweed, then yes, that would be a healthy alternative.

You will need to thoroughly break apart the seaweed into very small pieces. I would put the sheets of seaweed into a zip top bag and then crumble the seaweed in the bag.

Then measure out 1/4 to 1/3 cup for this recipe.

Since your dog is sensitive to cheese products, you can also substitute a non-dairy Parmesan cheese as another option.

When kept in the fridge, the biscuits get a little soft. Is this ok?

Made this for my four dogs and they love it, even my picky eater.

I used cold milled flax seed and it worked really well. What I liked about this recipe is that it contains a lot of the flax (1 cup) compared to others that only ask for a couple of tablespoons.

Thank you for helping my best friends stay healthy.

Chef's Answer ~ I'm glad your dogs are enjoying these flax squares! :)

It's OK for the treats to get softer in the fridge. But, if you want them to stay crispier, I would recommend storing them in the freezer and then thawing just what you'll need for the next day in the fridge the night before.

Or, you can also re-crisp the cookies in the oven for a few minutes.

Are these Flaxseed dog treat squares gluten free?

Are these grain free? Wheat free yes, but gluten free? Also, how many is safe to feed? You have an awesome site here, but there aren't feeding guidelines...

Chef's Answer ~ Yes, flax is gluten free. Each dog is a little different, their size, weight, activity level and age. That's why I don't have guidelines for the homemade dog treats. Use your best judgement. When in doubt, give less treats and more tummy rubs and hugs. :)
