Room temp or refrigerated for this dog treat icing??

by Kristine

Will these icings spoil if left out, like in a bakery case, or do they need to be refrigerated??

Chef's Answer ~ Yes, these dog treat icings will spoil if left out. They do not contain any preservatives.

If you'd like to investigate using dog treat preservatives I would recommend checking out K9 Cakery. They also have a lot of fun and unique things to bake and decorate with for homemade dog treats.

I hope this helps. Happy Dog Treat Baking! :)

Cream Cheese should be at room temperature

It is a lot easier to make this if you let your cream cheese hit room temp just about so it's nice and soft... I forgot to get mine out and had one heck of a time mixing it lol...

Do the cookies have to stay in the Refrigerator after they are iced?

I like the idea of making the frosting from scratch, not using yogurt chips, but I am worried that the cookies will go bad if I use this frosting and they are not refrigerated. It doesn't say if they need to stay refrigerated.

Chef's Answer ~ Yes, dog treats that are frosted with the cream cheese icing need to stay in the fridge until served.

If you would like to try another type of dog treat icing, check out this website, K9 Cakery.com they even have a healthy cream cheese dog treat icing mix that you could use.

Petey and Petula (the Boxers) LOVE the dog treat frosting

They were trying to steal some while I was mixing & when I put the cookies in the fridge (with the frosting) they started pawing at me and whining.

Although I used 1/2 as much it still covered TEN cookies!!! Thanks For The Recipe (it got really irritating when I was looking up icing cause most all that came up was the "Fido" thing, so glad I found this)!!!

What a great recipe!

Oh my god! I made the bacon and chicken cake with the cream cheese frosting and my dog inhaled it!

I added one more jar of baby food and some cheddar in the batter. Also I folded in some of the bacon too. I made them into cupcakes and they looked super elegant. Incredible recipe.

Cream Cheesed Icing

by Dawn & Buddy
(Maryland)

Hi All! I’m like crazy in love with my dogs, probably like most of you! I’m always looking for new and healthy things for my furry guy.

I guess it was back in September, a couple friends and I were scouting out a venue for our annual event, The Dog-a-thon. Buddy, my Golden, and I are volunteers with Pets on Wheels. Anyway one of the ladies who met us there brought her two dogs...she let them out of the car and went to put their leashes on like always and they took off...off into about 1000 acres of woods and fields. We searched and searched for hours but couldn’t find them...come to find out a gentleman who lived close to the area saw them and grabbed them up...the only tag they had on was their rabies tag...and since it was late in the day the vet's office (listed on the tag) was closed...so he called first thing the next morning, believe it or not he had washed and bathed the two crazy Samoyeds, well one dog and one puppy with show coats. All was well and good, thank God! Well, the owner of the 2 dogs gave me an organic doggie cook book with cookie cutters as a thanks for helping look (which she did not have to do! We would have helped no matter what!)

So, I’ve used this cook book a couple of times since then and my dog LOVES everything, so far! Though I have to admit that I was hoping he wouldn’t like the liver cookies because they were pretty smelly while baking  Then earlier today I got to thinking about making some more cookies and the cookies at specialty dog store jumped into my head…you know the ones that are like half dipped in carob and such…so I jump on here and found the wonderful cream cheese icing recipe. It was awesome…I made a bunch of heart cookies in different sizes for Valentine’s Day for Buddy to give to all his friends. I tinted the icing pink and blue and they look great! I’m so excited to try some more recipes from here! You all are awesome!! Thanks

Can this be frozen?
by: Anonymous

Can these dog treats with cream cheese icing being frozen? I've made the peanut butter treats with cream cheese icing and will it all turn to mush when thawed out?

Chef's Answer ~ Homemade dog treats with cream cheese icing can be frozen. However, you're right the texture of the icing will change. Most likely it will crack or be drier than fresh. My recommendation is to freeze the plain dog cookies and then put the cream cheese icing on after the treats have completely thawed.
