Diesel & dog park friends love this dog treat recipe

by Mary

My dog Diesel and all of his friends at the dog park love the Italian Spinach Balls.

My dog isn't overweight, but there is one older dog at the park that wasn't allowed treats because she was. I remembered the low fat recipes newsletter and made them.

I use a round shape 1 tsp. measuring spoon and cut the bake time to about 12 minutes. It makes a perfect treat size for the smaller dogs that way. I did make them bigger the first time, but had to cut or break them for the smaller dogs.

Keep the great recipes coming.

wheat flour substitute
by: Whitney

Can brown rice flour & flaxseed meal be used instead of whole wheat flour? If so, in what measurements?

Chef's Answer ~ Rice flour is more dense than wheat flour, so I would recommend using a 1/2 cup of brown rice flour and 1/8 cup of another acceptable flour substitute. For example you could use Garbanzo bean flour (also called Chick Pea Flour) or Almond flour (also called almond meal).

Then I would also add 1/8 cup, or 2 Tablespoons of ground flax.

I think the addition of flax seed meal is a great way to boost the healthy qualities of this dog treat recipe, good choice. :)

I hope these substitutions work well for you, if you have any other questions, please let me know.

My one dog can not have wheat,( one needs to keep his weight down) what kind of flour can I use instead of the whole wheat flour? I would like to be able to make the same kind for both pets.

Thank you

Chef's Answer ~ I would recommend using a gluten free all purpose flour mix. You can purchase these at most major grocery stores. Or, you can make up your own mix. For each cup of wheat flour that you substitute, use 1/2 cup Garbanzo bean flour, 1/4 cup almond meal and 1/4 cup tapioca starch.

I hope this helps. :)
