CherryMac the pit bull loves the homemade dog treats!

Cherry's glamour shot

Cherry's glamour shot

I had a lot of leftover kabocha squash and used that, mashed with a fork, instead of canned pumpkin. Had to use more water (1/2 c. or so), but that was OK. Spread the dough out in a baking sheet, baked 40-45 minutes, then cut into training treat-sized cubes. Perfect for training my new foster dog and he LOVES them!!

Good and Easy Dog Treat Recipe!
by: Anonymous

My beagle, lab mix has been having runny stool and my friends told me that pumpkin helps regulate the texture of dog poop. So I went online and searched for dog treats that include pumpkin and I found this recipe! My dog gobbled up this treat and loves it! Also his stool was back to normal in 1 day!

Peanut Butter Pumpkin dog cookies

by Linda Perry
(Portland Oregon)

WOW, this recipe was amazing and my 2 cocker spaniels loved the cookies. Very easy to make and rolling out the dough was so easy. It was incredible how easy it was to roll the dough and I did not have to add water as was so moist with the pumpkin. Baked them for 30 minutes and then turned off the over for 2 hours. Came out GREAT, wonderful recipe.

Toy poodle vs dog treats
by: Anonymous

My two poodles loved them. I followed the recipe to the letter. Only problem: Way sticky!! There was no way I could roll them out. I couldn't even get the dough off my fingers. Finally I added more flour and more flour before giving up and just putting them on the cookie sheet every which way. The dogs loved them. They licked my fingers clean.

Sampson Woofed The Dog Treats Right on Down!

by Mary Bogue
(Arcadia, CA)

SAMPSON loved tastes from the first trial batch so much that splotches and then puddles of drool collected on the kitchen floor while batches went in and out of the oven.

Now, I made my own oat flour in my Blendtec blender, and then added flax seed and organic pumpkin seeds to boot. Still, this dough was so ridiculously sticky, that I had to add some flour to it, and roll it on a heavily floured board.

I baked mine on a silicone pad on my cookie trays in a 375 oven to dry them out a bit more. Simple round shapes meant it cooked more evenly. In the final batches, I used the tines of a fork to decorate them.

Of course I tasted them, and while they won't satisfy any sweet tooth, I am assured that my Sampson couldn't be any happier unless they had a tennis ball center. Yum!

Oh, and using an upside down brandy snifter for a cookie cutter, I made 12 dozen! WOW!

Made These Dog Treats a Second Time - with SWEET POTATO
by: Sampson's Mama

Hi everyone,

Sampson was kind enough to share with a Hollywood dog of fame who rather loved these treats as well.

I decided to make more yesterday, but was out of pumpkin. Instead I baked two medium sweet potatoes and let them cool before scooping out the flesh. I followed the rest of the recipe with my oatmeal flour substitution and rolled out the rounds of dough very thin. To make life easy, I cut them with a little ravioli trimmer which made pinking shear edges, bigger than a traditional cheese nip cracker.

This made 200 treats. Ya gotta love that - Sammy did!

BONE APPETITE!
Mary

Small Dog in love with Pumpkin Dog Treats!

by Kyra
(Springfield, Illinois)

I made mine and added a 1/2 cup of quick oats and used milk instead of water. My dog luuuurves these treats. It made enough that I could refill my best friends also (she has a 4 month old puppy) so everyone was happy and we are using them for training treats! Yeah!

Pumpkin and Peanut Butter Dog Treat Recipe

I tried a similar recipe from another site (before I discovered this site). The biscuits came out hard and almost inedible.

I tried THIS recipe today, although used Sweet Potato puree (grocer was out of the pumpkin), and the dogs gobbled them up. They were even waiting on me as the biscuits were coming out of the oven.

An easy treat to make - and share - with our canine buddies.

Pumpkin dog treats are a hit

by Carrie
(Allen Park, MI)

I made this with brown rice flour instead and while 2 of my bulldogs loved it immediately, my third had to be convinced to try it. THEN she loved it. I baked them for 12 minutes, but the size is about 3" long by 1/2" wide (big dogs).

My dog loves these cookies ...just one question

by Sherri
(NJ)

I rolled out the cookies just as you instructed and baked them for about 30 minutes. They came out puffy. Any ideas? This happened with the Peanut Butter & Oatmeal cookies, too.
Thanks

Chef's Answer ~ First, let me point you to a similar question that has been answered about how to eliminate bubbles in homemade dog treats.

Then, to add to that above answer, another possibility is over mixing the batter. This can introduce air bubbles that puff up the dog cookie. Stir the wet and dry ingredients just until combined to help eliminate puffy cookies.

I hope this has helped. Happy Dog Treat Baking! :)

Roscoe loves these cookies !!!

by Fred
(Virginia)

Roscoe - Cocker Spaniel - loved these cookies.

He sat by the stove the whole time they were cooking.

I made a couple changes to the recipe. I used Cinnamon Applesauce instead of cinnamon and water. And I added some oatmeal to it.

I'm sure your dog will love them too.

Pumpkin Apple Version of this recipe

by Lora
(Florida)

Love the recipe but discovered Grappa is allergic to peanut butter! Replaced the peanut butter with 1 finely chopped apple and increased the pumpkin to a 28 oz can, and bake for 20 minutes. Keep in freezer and thaw in refrigerator - produces soft cookies which my dogs love!

Chef's Comments ~ Great substitution suggestion! :) You can also replace peanut butter with almond butter or soy butter.

Substituting wheat flour for rice flour

by Josie
(Rockmart,Ga. )

I have to have gluten free for my pugs and their skin so I was wondering if I could change the wheat flour for rice flour in this recipe? I truly appreciate your help.

Chef's Answer ~ Yes, you absolutely can. You can use regular or brown rice flour. I hope your pugs enjoy the homemade dog treats.

I hope that helps. Happy Dog Treat Baking! :)

Sticky sticky dog treat dough

by katy
(nj)

I made them they were so sticky and didn't roll well enough. What did I do wrong????????????????

Chef's Answer ~ It sounds like you may have not added enough flour while you were rolling the dough. You may want to lightly flour your rolling pin, too.

If all else fails, you can roll the dough between two pieces of wax paper. It takes a little longer, but it might be easier for you.

I hope this helps. Happy Dog Treat Baking! :)

Moose loved the dog treats

Great dog treat recipe! I used a small can of pumpkin (I didn't know what to do with the small amount left so threw it all in), substituted 1 1/2 cup brown rice flour, and 1 cup oatmeal and 2 T ground flax seed for the wheat flour, and used remainder of ingredients listed.

Just dropped onto pan and used fork to press in crisscross pattern - about an 1 1/2" diameter- 1/4" thick baked 20 min. Moose (mastiff/shepherd) loved them. Great addition to his diet.

Dachshund approved homemade dog treats

I made these cookies today and made one substitution, unsweetened applesauce for the water. I used a 1" cutter and baked the first batch for 30 minutes. After they cooled, they were crisp on the outside but still soft on the inside and slightly puffy. Baked the second batch for 45 minutes and they came out crispier. My three taste testers loved them and demanded another taste!

I do not like giving my dogs wheat products can oat or rice flour be used in these dog treats?

by DanieL
(Philadelphia PA)

I prefer not to give my girls wheat, can oat or rice flour be used? If so would it change the baking time?

Chef's Answer ~ Yes, oat or brown rice flour can be used in this dog treat recipe. It will not change the baking time of the treat. It may change the amount of liquid you need to make the dough. Stick with the recipe as it is stated. Then, if the the dough seems too dry, add one tablespoon of water at a time until you have the right consistency.

I hope this helps. Happy Dog Treat Baking! :)

Anyone tried using a cookie press with this recipe?

by Deb
(Cordova, TN)

I wonder if using a cookie press would work with this recipe or if simply rolling small balls of dough to bake would work? Thanks!

Chef's Answer ~ I haven't tried using a cookie press for this recipe, but I bet with a few modifications it could work.

I would recommend doubling the amount of water to get a "loose" dough that would easily press through the machine.

If you have used your cookie press before, try to mimic the consistency of the doughs that have worked for you in the past. Slowly add more liquid until it is just soft enough to be easily pressed through.

My dogs are on a grain free diet

by Tammy S.
(TX)

What is a good substitution for wheat flour for a grain free diet?

Chef's Answer ~ A combination of wheat, gluten and grain free flours will be a good substitution for most of my dog treat recipes that call for whole wheat flour.

For each cup of wheat flour that you are replacing, use the following: 1/2 cup Garbanzo bean flour, 1/4 cup almond flour and 1/4 cup tapioca flour.

Alaskan Malamute Approved!

by Casey
(Sacramento, CA)

As with all crazy dog lovers, I LOVE to cook for my babies! I have 6 Alaskan Malamutes who went absolutely nuts for these cookies!

The dough does come out really sticky, but we made it work :) - If I would have let them, they would have eaten every cookie right there! (I doubled the recipe by the way :) )

Also shared them with my parents Pitt Bull (LOVES THEM!) and my sister's Chihuahua mix (ALSO LOVES THEM!)

Thank you for such a great recipe! I cant wait to try some other ones!

Can I store the unbaked dough?

How long could I store the cookie dough or batter?

Chef's Answer ~ Most unbaked dog treat dough can be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months. Be sure to wrap it in plastic wrap, then foil and then place it into a labeled freezer bag. Squeeze as much air out of each wrapping process as possible. This will help to keep out any frost bite.
