I have recently started a dog treat business. I am very concerned about the baking soda. Is it harmful? In every recipe I need it but it is only about 1 teaspoon. Does it bake out at all? I don't want to make dogs sick. Is there something I could use instead of baking soda or powder?
Chef's Answer ~ You can omit the baking powder or baking soda completely from your dog treats. These ingredients tend to add texture and make the treats rise, two things that dogs may not miss in the finished treat.
Try making a quarter size batch of one of your recipes without the baking powder or baking soda to see how the finished treat turns out. You may be able to omit it all together if you are still happy with the way the treat looks.
However, the small amount of baking powder or soda will be "used up" in the baking process and will no longer cause harm to a dog. These ingredients are only a concern if they are eaten alone.
I hope this helps! :)
